Toronto, Canada â GAO Research Inc. has launched its economical, flexible and reliable Soft-modem for Set-Top Boxes (STB). The soft-modems are designed to be compliant with specific ITU-T standards and yield comparable reliability and quality to traditional hardware modem chipsets. GAOâs soft-modems run on a DSP or microprocessor along with other control software and require an analog front-end.
GAOâs modular, re-locatable and reentrant soft-modems support multi-channel capability and improved for all common embedded hardware platforms. They are operating within a multi-tasking environment or as a stand-alone task and are optimized for fixed-point arithmetic. They support most commercial analog front ends (AFE) as well as various discrete DAAs with codes, depending on the application.
GAOâs soft-modems are the ideal solution for satellite STB units. The lower speed modems, using V.22 or V.22bis standards, provide a speedy hand-shaking process and a sufficient bit rate to complete the typical data transaction requiring relative low bandwidth within seconds. The higher-speed modems including V.34, V.90 and V.92, have maximum downstream data rates of 33.6kbps, 48kbps and 56kbps respectively. These high-speed modems are suitable for the transfer of data for interactive STB applications that require real-time response such as interactive gaming and Internet/email/IM access.
GAOâs high-speed soft-modems are typically deployed in high-end satellite STBs in order to support advanced interactive features, to meet desirable response times and higher bit rates..

Recently it’s become difficult to open a newspaper or turn on the TV without hearing about the latest, cheapest and best broadband package from the UK’s growing number of broadband providers. When each Internet Service Provider (ISP) claims to provide the best broadband package it’s difficult to select the most suitable option.
There a number of different criteria you should consider before signing up with a new broadband provider; here we look at what you should consider when you compare broadband packages.
So who needs broadband?
If you want to access the internet at a decent speed, download music, films, play online games or use internet phone (VoIP) then you should strongly consider getting broadband. If you intend to use your broadband connection for a number of these activities then you need to consider download limits.
If you only intend to use your internet connection for surfing the web and sending the occasional email high download limits and speed should not be a major concern. If you fall into this category price, level of customer service and reliability of connection should be taken into consideration.
It’s worth looking at the freebies included in broadband packages such as those offering free wireless broadband as part of the subscription. Down loading music, games, films, video clips, playing online games, and the use of internet phone services such as Skype, Vonage and Demon all require data to be downloaded. The more you use your broadband connection for these activities the greater the download limit you will require. For users who are heavy down loaders an unlimited broadband package is the best option as these set no limit on your monthly downloads.
So what about broadband speed?
Download speed is the rate with which data is transferred from the internet to your computer. Download speed is measured in megabits per second, commonly abbreviated to Mb. Broadband speeds on offer can vary greatly; it is currently available from 512k (0.5Mb) to 22Mb. A 512k connection is still 10 times faster than dial up and will be fine when generally surfing the net and sending emails. However, if you like downloading lots of music or video and playing games online, you might want to consider a faster connection. In general, a 1 or 2Mb connection will offer you the best balance between performance and price and will be more than adequate for the vast majority of broadband users.
Should you go Wireless?
Wireless broadband has a number of advantages and is now offered as a freebie with some UK broadband providers. Wireless broadband will allow you to access your broadband connection from any where in close proximity of your wireless router (the device enabling your connection to be wireless). Unless you live in a small castle this should allow you to access broadband anywhere within your home. A further advantage of wireless broadband is that you can share the connection between multiple computers within the household though you will be splitting the speed of connection by doing so and you are likely to require a higher download limit if a number of people are accessing the connection. An additional consideration, and one that is surprisingly often ignored, is to remember to add a password to your connection if you chose wireless broadband. Importantly this will stop other people, perhaps neighbours, using your broadband connection which presents a security risk and will affect the performance of your broadband connection.
A final consideration should be security measures
It is highly advisable to purchase an antivirus package to protect your computer and avoid falling victim to online fraud. A firewall will offer further protection. Different levels of security are offered with different packages, these include parental controls, antivirus software and firewalls, some broadband packages will include all 3 as part of package.

Don’t you find it annoying that whenever you are in a middle of research or online surfing, the connection suddenly stops? If you’ve experienced that a number of times, perhaps the problem might lie with the cable modem. And what you can do perform a few tweaks on the cable modem in order to optimize its operation.
Say the cable modem on your computer gets disconnected after a few minutes, then here’s a cable modem tweak that can help you address the issue. One reason this thing happens in your computer is that this is Windows XP-related. On the Windows XP, there is an option that allows the computer to turn off the USB device in order to save on power. Now what you can do is to disable this option. Just click on the start button and highlight the My Computer icon and select the option that says properties. A window will then appear with the system properties. Navigate the window by clicking on the hardware tab and press the device manager button. Expand the serial bus controllers and double click on the USB root hub. You’ll now see the Power Management tab and uncheck the ‘allow the computer to turn off the device to save power’. If the computer displays a number of USB root hub, then make sure that you repeat the same steps for that same number of hubs. Often a cable modem that disconnects after a few hours can be remedied by performing these two steps. One cable modem tweak that is possible is by disabling the hibernation. You can right click on the desktop and click the screen saver tab. You’ll notice the power button of the display properties dialog. Click that one. Another dialog box will appear and you’ll be shown the hibernate tab. Use this box to uncheck the box beside the enable hibernation. Another good step is to disable the Windows Messenger. On the start button, select run and input the words gpedit.msc. Proceed to the Computer Configuration then select the Administrative Templates, then straight to Windows Components and on to Windows Messenger. Don’t run the messenger, just go to the properties and check the box near it to enable.
Another thing that computer users can do is to configure the modem delay time. This is true usually to Motorola and Rockwell modems. And this issue always happens right after the user has installed the Windows 2000 drivers on the XP Pro. In order to address the problem, here’s a little tweak that you can do. But as a precaution, make sure that you back up your registry even if there will be no problems. Again, click on the run and type the words ‘regedit’. Then you have to select the HKEY current user/remote access/profile/”your isp”. Then you to need to change the value of the disconnect idle time from 14 to zero. Following these simple steps can address the issue of internet disconnection every few hours. For a specific cable modem tweak, then a talk with the technical representative of the company can bring results.
